The Killjoys Pearl/ Ruby (Popboomerang Records)
A duet sung half from the point of view of an old guitar, the line ‘my name’s up in chalk’ and a song title I’m Drinking So Much It’s Coming Out of My Eyes. This is but a miniscule snapshot of the pleasures contained within Pearl, the new album from Melbourne indie pop stalwarts The Killjoys. Then there’s frontwoman Anna Burley’s extraordinarily wide-ranging voice – she can do intimate and fragile so it near breaks your heart, then seemingly effortlessly switch to alt. country rock ‘n’ roll so that said heart skips several beats and wants nothing more than to dance. There’s also the songwriting chutzpah inherent in the partnership between Burley and guitarist/ vocalist Craig Pilkington, surely up there with anything in the history of music, Lennon and McCartney can go right ahead and bite me. What to talk about next? The arrangements to absolutely die for? The sky high production values? The sheer and unadulterated beauty of the entire ten songs and one bonus track? Sheesh. Oh, and every member of the band over its long history contributed to Pearl, possibly saying more than this writer could ever hope to about The Killjoys integrity, warmth and value. Like the ringing in your heart of cathedral bells, to plagiarise and paraphrase a line from Shifting Sands, this is a record that will, quite simply, stay with you forever.
Still, though, this is – incredibly – not all. Like the world’s best set of steak knives, The Killjoys ARIA Award winning debut album Ruby, unavailable for years, is included here as the second of two discs, stunningly packaged in a gorgeous, undownloadable digi-pack format. Independent as all get out and somewhat sporadic in their output, the band were recently snapped up by visionary label Popboomerang Records, and the question now becomes, how did we ever live without them?

Pearl is the brand new studio album by the Killjoys set for release in October 2011. The album is a celebration of a distinguished career, featuring performances by all the band’s members over its eventful history. The luxury of being able to draw from this amazing well of talent has allowed studio performances of Killjoys line ups that never existed and a beautiful depth of layering that is evocative of all aspects of the Killjoys’ unique sound. The result is a work of glimmering beauty ranging from shining guitar pop, through to delicate chamber soundscapes.
20 years ago today the killjoys won the ARIA Best Independent Release award for their debut album Ruby. This album launched the band on a distinguished career of recording, releasing and touring records around the globe. Throughout that time the band have been favourites of the indie pop scene garnering glowing reviews for their shows and their lush recordings.

Ruby has been unavailable since the demise of distributors MDS 13 years ago and the band are celebrating the anniversary by remastering Ruby and packaging it together with their new studio album Pearl. Released on the bands new label Popboomerang Records, the new songs on “Pearl” evoke the emotions & soundscapes of ‘Ruby” and are embellished by past Killjoys members including Penny hewson, Caroline Schwerkolt, Michael Hohnen, Daniel Palamara and Jeremy Smith.
